Gran Canaria
Situated in the Atlantic Ocean, more than 650 miles to the south of Europe
and 130 miles off the African coast and the coast of the Sahara Desert
lies the southern-most island of Spain, Gran Canaria - the largest of
the Canary Islands.
Gran Canaria is a small continent in itself because of the extremely
varied landscapes with its mix of European, African and even American
vegetation. The mountain range in the centre of Gran Canaria has a peak
which rises 2,000 metres above sea level and is cut by some bizarre canyons.
If you can draw yourself away from the night life and the beaches and
hire a car for the day, they are well worth a visit.
